Just Smile

My Accomplishment

I had successfully demonstrated 1 lesson which is on Infinitive and Infinitive Phrases. I was very glad when I taught this because even when I did not have my practice, I was able to make it properly. I even got 4.07 in my evaluation, which is seldom given by my cooperating teacher. My students too had enjoyed the lesson because I let them watch a video clip.

My Significant Experience

Teaching the lesson on Infinitives was a significant experience because it was then challenging for I had to prepare a technology based instructional material and something manipulative. So I let the students watch a video using many infinitives and I let the answer a complete me chart and sentences on the board.

My Insights

Being a teacher, I should be very creative enough and I should address challenges. I have to think first of the welfare of the students before mine. So, I have to think more creatively on how to deliver my lesson properly and interestingly.

Problems

I forgot the speaker of the laptop which I would use for the video presentation.

Solution

I told my cooperating teacher about it. Fortunately, she is very understanding and told me to go to the faculty room and get her speaker. I was then very thankful to her.

My Goals for Next week

My goal is not to be late. Moreover, I have to complete my 10 lessons as required.

“Picture”

My Accomplishment

I had executed one lesson which was about logo making. It took me 3days to finish this lesson. For the first day, we did the discussion in first 30 minutes and the remaining 30 minutes was used by the students in making their drafts. For the second day, the students were given the time to finalize and finish their logos. For the third day, the students presented their logos in class. They explained every detail in their logos especially the colors they used.

My Significant Experience

The lesson on logo making was significant because I saw how creative my students are. I was able to talk to them also personally especially when they asked for my comments and suggestions. We also had picture taking for documentation. They are very cool and they enjoyed working together with our presence. This time we did not act very formal but we still observed limitations.

My Insights

Being a teacher is being a friend too. It is good to work with students also in a casual way. Times like this should also be given to students to build a good relationship to them. This way I will know my students better for they would have the chance to get out of their shells. I would love to work with my students in not very formal way in the future. But I will see to it that I will still be given respect.

Problem

My co- practice teacher attended a seminar on Friday and I did not know how to deal with my cooperating teacher alone. I feel unease with my cooperating teacher maybe because she is different from the other cooperating teacher I had before.

Solution

I did what she asked me to do and just entered in classrooms with her.

My Goal for Next Week

 My goal is to do good in my rated demo to my cooperating teacher. Also, to have a good attendance.

“Tensed”

My Accomplishments

I was able to have my rated demo to my supervising instructor Sir Villiam Ambong. My lesson was the poem “The Little Sampaguita.” I was relieved as I finished my demo. Moreover, I was able to execute the lesson on Infinitive and Infinitive Phrase successfully.

My Significant Experience

My rated demo to my supervising instructor was a significant experience. I’ve got all the tension for there was no preconference happened. So, I did not know his style. I was so sad that I got very low score on my lesson plan when in fact I based it on my past lesson plan. Though, I was happy that he appreciated me for not having code switching all throughout my demo even when students were trying to use Filipino language. Also, I was happy that he appreciated my materials and the way I serviced my students.

My Insights

As a good teacher in the future, I should develop optimism. I have to take every comments and suggestions positively for my improvement. I should take every downfall as a lesson to be better the next time. I should also remember that I cannot please everybody but I have to give my best to whatever I will do.

Problem

The lesson The Little Sampaguita” should be taken for two days. I really had a hard time on how to do the lesson in the first day because I have to consider my co-practice teacher who will teach the next day. I failed to keep some of the task so she seemed to make a review the next day.

Solution

My co-practice teacher made another interpretation for the poem. We’re glad that she was able to make it.

My Goal for Next week

My goal is to have a good attendance and to finish my remaining 3 lessons to complete my 10 required lessons.

“Technology Counts”

My Accomplishment

I was able to execute my lesson on Speech Choir successfully. I used a PowerPoint presentation as my aid in teaching. I also clipped video presentations of speech choirs which the students enjoyed.

My Significant Experience

Teaching the lesson on Speech Choir using a PowerPoint presentation was a significant experience. It was my first time to use technology in SLU-LHS. I was so grateful that I was able to operate the technology and that I made the learning livelier for the students were motivated by the video presentations and by the lines and actions I gave as examples like gesture showing determination.

My Insights

In teaching, a good strategy will make the learning more meaningful. As a teacher I should design a lesson considering the welfare of students. I should bear in mind that in designing a lesson, I have to think of the best way my learners could learn. So, I have to think of an aid that is appropriate and within the interest of learners to make learning more effective.

Problem

I am happy that this week, I have encountered no problems. Everything went right.

Goal for Next Week

My goal is to have a good attendance and to teach a lesson successfully.

“Creative Mind”

My Accomplishments

I executed two lessons which were Poem Making and Essay Writing. For the poem making, I highlighted the elements that should be present in a poem and the guidelines that should be considered to have a good poem. For the concept to be understood better, I used a sample poem to explain ideas.

In essay writing, I also highlighted the elements of an essay and the guidelines in writing an essay. Furthermore, I used an image of a man as an illustration for the parts of an essay. Fortunately, the students were able to relate and understand the concept of the subject matter to the concept of the human body parts.

It should be interesting and eye-catching.

It should contain appropriate and sufficient information.

feet- conclusion

There should be a conclusion to complete the essay.

These parts should be present to have a functional body and a functional essay.

My Significant Experience

Having the image of a man as an illustration in teaching essay writing was a significant experience because it was my first time to use an illustration in teaching. Moreover, I was able to relate clearly the concept of the subject matter to the illustration and I was able to have valuing in my lesson with my illustration. I was so happy that I was able to deliver my lesson well with an illustration.

My Insights

It is good to have an illustration in teaching a particular topic to make the lesson more interesting and understandable. A creative teacher will make a creative student. It is not only creativity in making something but also creativity in thinking. As a teacher, I should be creative enough for my students and I should not stop thinking new creative things.

Problem

I had a problem in resources. I’ve searched about my topics for this week and I got different data from different references. So, I got a hard time conceptualizing.

Solution

I compared the data from different references. I also used books until I was able to get the necessary information.

Goal for Next Week

My goal for next week is to have a good attendance. Also, to deliver my lesson on Speech Choir successfully.

My Accomplishments

I had demonstrated two lessons which are Spelling words and Tongue twisters I was very happy that I was able to make things alright.

My Significant Experience

My first time of teaching in SLU- Laboratory High school was very significant. Since it was my first time to teach and considering the type of students I have, I was very nervous. I had to make my English diction better because I was afraid they might make fun of me.

My Insights

My belief that a teacher should face every problem that comes was strengthen. it is because i was able to get through of my fear- fear of having new students. I realized that all I need is trust to myself.  I have to believe that I can do things. It may not be very good at first but I should assure myself to acquire things I needed for my betterment.

Problem

I am not familiar of my students and i had hard time calling the volunteers by their names during recitation.

Solution

I use the seatplan of the class and when the class is having a seatwork, I try to Study the seatplan.

My Acccomplishments

We had our orientation with the principal of Saint Louis Laboratory High School, Mr. Ronaldo Pontanosa. I was reminded of the policies of the schoo. After our orientation we met our Learning area Coordinator, Mrs. Karen Joy Viernes for further instructions. I was able to meet my cooperating teacher also, Mrs. Judy Santiago. Moreover, I and my co-practice teachers had decorated our area at the attic.

My Significant Experience

I consider the experience of decorating the attic with my co-practice teachers significant because it really made me happy. We helped each other and while we do the works we keep on giving jokes and relating what we do to what we will do to our classroom structure in the future. I was able to get ideas from my co-practice teachers. This experience is significant because it’s not all the time we are gathered and make a work happily.

My Insights

Working with each other needs understanding and openness. I have to be open to the other’s opinion so that there would be a better output. Also, I have to understand the concerns of others. For example, when a member is not talking but working. I have to know and understand why he is like that instead of reacting negatively right away. Moreover, cooperation and collaboration are needed for a better learning outcome as what we always say “two heads are better than one.” Relating to classroom base, I and the students should establish a good rapport so we could work together more effectively.

Problem

I was late once because the driver of the jeepney where I rode into passed through Lower General Luna which being closed every Monday to Friday. Since it was one way, we were into traffic jam. We waited for the other cars to give way. Suddenly a traffic aid came, so the driver immediately had a U-turn and passed through session road. It was very embarrassing for I went out of the boarding house at 6:25 but then I was still late.

Solution

I have to remind the driver to not pass through General Luna in case he is to pass.

My Goal for Next week

I need not to be late again.

I Feel Great!

Week No. 10

I Feel Great!

My Accomplishments

I was able to give make up activities for those students who have failing grades, as my cooperating teacher told me, before he  asked me to pass the grades of students. Fortunately, i only have one student who failed because he did not enter the class the whole week. Moreover, I was able to say good bye to my cooperating teacher and to my students properly as well as to the librarian who accommodated us in our extension program.

My Significant Experience

Saying good bye to my cooperating teacher, to my students and to the school librarian was not easy. I did not say too much words in my classes to prevent me from crying. The words of my students are very overwhelming. Some don’t like me to get out of their classroom and embrace me very tight. Moreover, before leaving their classrooms they gave me some simple tokens and took some pictures. some of my students also toured me to their campus while eating the snack they bought for me. There were two students of mine also who treated me for lunch and we got the the privilege to eat in the library for the librarians feel good about me too.

 My Insights

It is not really easy to say good bye to those people whom you had great time. It is beaking my heart. I cannot explain my feelings. The concern, the love and the happiness my students shared to me are the return of my investments in teaching them for two months. I really feel good of the comments I received from them. Now I know what is in teaching profession. There may be no much money but with much love and happiness.

Problem

I had a hard time looking for the students who need make up activities.

Solution

I asked help from their classmates. I asked them to call me when their classmates enter their class.

Goal for Nextweek

My goal for next week is to start my first week in Saint Louis Laboratory High School with flying colors.

Week No. 9

October 7-10, 2014

Rush Hour!

My Accomplishments

I finished my remaining required executed lessons. Also, I proctored the examination of my Serenity class. I watched over them to prevent them from any unnecessary movements. Moreover, I was able to address their questions about the test questionnaires for there are some questions and directions  they do not understand.

My Significant Experience

There was this one morning that I almost got late because I woke up late and there was no jeepney also. As I arrived at the gate of Baguio City National High School, I ran and ran. There were some students of mine who saw me and asked me why am I running. I smiled at them and told them that I was already late. From this, I thought of not getting into this trouble again so I have to adjust things. This was my first time to be in this situation in BCNHS, so, I consider this as my significant experience.

My Insights

Sometimes when I  was in trouble I seem to hate everybody around me especially when almost everything get worst. But, I should understand this things as normal happenings for me not to be stressed and to have a healthy set of mind.

Problem

I had difficulty in managing my time during this week.

Solution

I made a schedule for the things I have to do and it helped me a lot.

My Accomplishments

I have finished seven lessons for this week and I was so glad that I got a perfect score in my appreciation type of lesson plan. Moreover, we had our examination for practice teaching. Fortunately, I was able to get a 55 points which is a half of that 100 point exam.

My Significant Experience

Teaching literature, specifically the selection entitled The Joys of Human Life was a significant experience. It was because I was able to encourage my students to share their stand and their experiences related to the message of each line of the selection. I know that my stuudents trust me for they were able to share their personal experiences during the discussion. I was able to process each sharing that is why the ideas were well-thought  out and I was able to leave something to them.

My Insights

Sometimes it was not  that easy to address students sharings and questions especially if these are all about human conditions. But, as a teacher who is responsible of inculcating values to students, I should address these in a way that i am not basing things only from my own point of view.

Problems

During discussions, there were unexpected questions from students which are quite hard to address.

Solution

I thought of the things I will say first before verbalizing things in lass. In grammar, I tried to give them some short review to direct them to the concept. In literature, I asked for the other students of their stand or idea. Then, gave my own explanation and had them reflect.

My Goal for Next week

To maintain my good attendance and to finish my 5 more lessons to complete my required 30 lessons.

My Accomplishments

            I executed 5 lessons successfully. Also, I was able to have my demo teaching rated by my supervising instructor about parallelism in writing. I was so glad my Trustworthiness class participated in the discussion and in the activity I had given them. Moreover, I was able to make a lesson plan and instructional materials for the assigned Teacher for a Day. I taught them how to deliver the lesson on Idiomatic Expressions and they were able to execute the lesson well. Therefore I can say that the lesson plan I made was suited for their level and that I was effective enough in coaching them.

My Significant Experience

            Last October 2 was World Teachers’ Day. I was greeted by my students and they had given me cards. Moreover, we were invited in the program. It was our first time to be considered in this kind of program. So, we prepared a dance and a song for teachers. It was our first time to perform as a group in Baguio City National High School so we practiced a lot before the program. We were all excited but nervous too. Fortunately, we were able to give a good performance. The teachers had given us positive feed backs. This day was also significant because we had time to have fun during the practice. We had picture taking together too.

My Insights

            We were not licensed teachers yet. But, we are glad to be treated as one. The respect and the courtesy of our students brighten our day. Sometimes, I am so stressed because of so many stuffs to do. But, when a student smiles at me and greets me, I feel alright as if my loads lighten. I really feel relieved.

Problems

            I had a problem in delivering my lesson on Parallelism because my students don’t even know the grammatical forms and the grammatical functions of words and phrases. They cannot recognize adjectives nor verbs and even the subject and the predicate of a sentence.

Solution

            During my discussion I had explained the grammatical forms and functions of words and phrases. Also, I incorporate these things in some of my lessons also in grammar and give them some review.

Expect the Unexpected

My Accomplishment

            I successfully executed 5 lesson plans for this week. I was so happy that this week, there was no interruption. Also, I was able to make my lesson plan for my demo teaching rated by my supervising instructor. Unfortunately, my lesson plan needs some improvement like having a theme and an interesting activity so I had to revise and rewrite it.

My Significant Experience

            It was Friday when I taught a literature lesson for the first time. I taught the short story “The Wolf of Gubbio.” One of the objectives of my lesson was that of having the students role play a twist ending for the story. In my Obedience class which is 10:00-11:00, I got angry and I shouted at my students to the highest level of my voice. I shouted, “My goodness Obedience! You are very noisy! But when I ask you questions, you can’t even answer! You’re too much!” it was my first time to do this in my class. I was not able to hold on my temper. We started late because many were not yet inside. They were still at the canteen having their snack. So, I was really determined to finish all the groups. But then, the students were too noisy and were so busy practicing even if the time for their practice was over. So, the other groups were not able to perform and this is the only class, among my four classes, who did not finish the activity. For how many times I asked them to settle down, they did not care to listen to me. Moreover, when I talked and apologized to my cooperating teacher, he was also on my side. He told me that the students deserve it because it was not the first time they did it. This experience is really something significant.

My Insight

            In teaching, it is not always happy because there are sudden problems that will arise. But as a teacher, I have to make a way to give more time for happiness rather than sadness in my class. Whatever the bad thing happened, it should serve as a lesson only, not something to be taken personally against the students. Because, how a teacher sees her students will affect the teaching and learning process. So, I as a teacher should be the one who will adjust for the betterment of learning.

Problems

            Some of the students in the 2^nd and last classes of mine tend not to listen and prefer chatting with their seatmates. And the worst thing about that is that they were the ones who have low performance.

Solution

            I consult this to my cooperating teacher and he said it was really their nature. They are used of chatting with their friends and they take this as their responsibility already. What I do when they were too busy with their businesses is that I sit down and let them feel I am mad at them. Fortunately, it is effective!

My Goal for Next Week

            To maintain my good attendance, to teach 5 lessons, to create a better atmosphere with my Obedience class, and most of all to be successful in my demo teaching which will be rated by my supervising instructor. May God send all the angels from the heaven.  God bless me.

Understand and Learn

My Accomplishments

            I was able to have my three rated demonstrations and fortunately I got high ratings. Also, I, together with my advisory students, finished structuring my classroom. All the necessary information needed was posted and we made some decorations to beautify the classroom.

My Significant Experience

            Checking essay outputs of students for the first time was a significant experience. Through this I was able to know how good they are in writing and how they react to a given topic. For example, topics about getting high grades, fashion trends, and empowering people. Moreover, I was able to know how they think and understand how they perform in school because they related real life situations.

My Insights

            I have realized that it is not right to get mad and react negatively to students right after they made something wrong. I have to know the reason behind their actions. It would not be so easy for me to do this but I believe I could think of some more strategies to know my students more aside from essay writing. Therefore, I could say that a teacher is a researcher too.

Problem

            Most of my fourth year students do not know how to construct sentences correctly. So, I had difficulty in understanding their thoughts. I got head ache in checking. Also, there are basic concepts learned from their previous year level and yet they do not know.

Solution

            I did talk to my cooperating teacher about it and he advised me not to expect too much from them for they are in regular sections or assume that students know an idea just because they had it in their previous year level. With this, I’m quite disappointed but I am trying to apply the theory of Krashen in every lesson I will teach. It is because I want to help my students.

Goals for Next Week

            To maintain my good attendance and to have five successful rated demonstration.

           

           

Learning by Doing

Week No. 4

September 2-5, 2014

 Learning by Doing 

My Accomplishments

            I was able to join and complete the 3-day orientation and training for boys scouts. I learned the history, fundamentals and guidelines of scouting. Moreover, I was able to make the challenges during the scouting and most of all I was able to get along with others whom I don’t really know. I was able to befriend them. Also, I had one lesson demonstrated successfully.

My Significant Experience

            Joining the scouting for the boys was a significant experience to me for I gained a lot of knowledge about scouting and how to be a scouter and I learned some new survival skills. We were taught how to measure distances without using any instruments, reading compass for direction, lashing and knot tying for building wooden shelter, and bandaging for different type of injuries. Also, I was able to know the flag code and I learned how to fold the Philippine flag properly. These skills are important to me as a future teacher who could be a scouter. I was so grateful for this opportunity given to us.

My Insights

            Being a teacher is not just teaching the students in the classroom, it is also empowering the social involvement and promoting the skills and talents of the students. A way of achieving such is scouting. There are some things that are not taught in school which are taught in scouting. The experiences the students would have are not usually given in an academic setting. Hence, as a future scouter, I should acquire the necessary skills needed and I must educate myself more.

Problems

            I should have taught in Thursday but we were informed evening before the day so its kind a late.

I don’t also have my cooperating teacher’s number so I could have text him. I didn’t get his number for he told me he would just text me so I was then ashamed of getting his number. Our set schedule was then ruined after the case of scouting.

Solution

            I asked my cooperating teacher if he could teach the four sections having different lessons. Fortunately, I was able to please him.

Goals for Next Week

            I have to maintain my good attendance and I have to do good in my five set lessons. Also, I have to finish decorating the advisory room of my cooperating teacher having all the necessary requirements specified in the given rubric.

Happy Hours

My Accomplishments

I was so glad for having a good attendance this week. Though I sleep very late at night, I was able to wake up early for school. Also, my straight teaching for four days was successful because I got high ratings in my lesson plans and in my demonstrations. Being at the classrooms everyday helped me understand the nature of my classes. My sleepless nights are worth it for I was able to grow as a practice teacher.

My Significant Experience

Delivering the lesson on denotation and connotation was significant to me. I got only 3 hours of sleep because I had to plan my teaching very well using an inductive method. I had the idea of bringing guests in my classes so I made a dummy and named it Mr. and Mrs. Dummy. Bringing my guests in my classes and maximizing their uses made the students happier. It may be corny to be changing my voice for the dummy but it’s nothing for I have seen how interested and motivated my students were during the discussion and activities. My cooperating teacher also appreciated my strategy and he told me that he did not expect such kind of strategy in teaching the lesson. I was so grateful because I believe I was then an effective teacher.

My Insights

It was good to be considering the welfare of the students rather than mine. From my set of experience this week, I could definitely say that if the students grow then I as a teacher grows too. Moreover, I have this heavenly feeling every time I see my students enjoying their learning. It might be so good to hear but it’s true.

Problem

There was a time when I forgot the hand outs for my students and which would be used in the discussion. I almost fainted for I needed them first period in the morning.

Solution

I searched my flash drive in my bags then ran to the coop of the school. I printed the hand outs for my students even if I will lost an amount of money.

Goal for Next Week

I have to maintain a good attendance. Also, I have to make  good lesson plans for me to have successful demonstrations for my students to learn a lot.
